We are at a crossroads in the American experience.  We are as divided a nation as we were just prior to the Civil War; we are at odds over exactly what it means to be American.  

I call on Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to withdraw her announced intention to resign; I call on the President to nominate Sandra Day O'Connor to serve as the Chief Justice of the United States; I call on Justice O'Connor to announce her intention to serve in that role--acknowledging that this service would require her to make the tremendous sacrifice of caring fully for her husband, to whom she is bound to provide care--through the end of the 2006 - 2007 term; that Judge Roberts (and this is said in the spirit of compromise and comity) be nominated to fill the vacant seat on the Court.
